    UPDATE: Tuesday, Oct. 29, 8:30 a.m.
We are pleased to announce that Wi-Fi service has been restored to the Asheville Center. Current students, faculty, and staff may now access the building for study, work or other necessary activities. Please note there may be occasional short outages as our service provider continues the recovery process.

Drinking water is not available in the building. Some bottled water is available on site, but we encourage anyone using the building to bring their own drinking water if possible. The bathrooms on site now have working toilets.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate the challenges posed by Hurricane Helene. Please stay tuned for further updates.

Special Education Minor

Become a resource for those with special needs and work to improve education for the intellectually diverse.

Our minor in special education is ideal if you are looking for a way to assist those with various physical or intellectual challenges. Our program will enrich your elementary or middle school education major and prepare you to work with individuals with a wide range of disabilities and impairments.

Through our courses you will learn how to adapt, accommodate and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all children. You will also learn how to become a partner with families and understand the importance of documentation, assessment and planning.

Teachers with special education knowledge are highly sought after. Many school districts want to offer inclusive education without the need for a regular and special educator in the classroom.

The Special Education minor is intended to enhance the educational experience and knowledge of undergraduate education majors. Non-education majors who wish to pursue this minor must seek permission from the School of Education Chair. These students cannot pursue the Elementary or Middle Grades Education concentrations listed below because the courses require formal admission to the School of Education. Non-education majors, if approved by the Chair to pursue the minor, may complete Ìý²¹²Ô»å  in addition to the core Minor requirements to satisfy the concentration requirements.

A minor in Special Education requires 19-21 hours consisting of the following:
